  1. It's beautiful Dan DeCarlo art with strong Dan DeCarlo pacing, layouts & story-telling, but what really makes it is the clever & fun writing of (I would assume) Frank Doyle.

By the way, that first story really is evidence for the supposition that Jughead is gay. The simple joy on his face--and his body language--when he first thinks 'It'll just be the two of [them].' It's a juvenile, platonic kind of gay paradise he imagines, but he is possessive, wanting Archie all to himself. Too bad for Jughead Archie is shown in short order to be the raving heterosexual that he is. Or is it the aggression he likes? Maybe Jughead needs to be more direct? Not that I think Jughead is always open to this interpretation, just that he is here. And how.

The other stories are great, too, just less inviting to psycho-babble. The top of the third page of 'Peace, It's Horrible' does have a Wally Wood-esque figure wandering around in the background of it, and its last page highlights the influence Dan DeCarlo--and I guess Frank Doyle--had on Jaime Hernandez.

    A real fun issue overall.

  2. DeCarlo was my favorite Archie comics artist, I love Harry Lucey's artwork as well...they are kind of the Kirby and Ditko of Archie comics. It's really weird to see DeCarlo's good girl cartoons of the 1950's though It's like Betty and Veronica with bigger boobs.

There were a few issues of Jughead where he was really into the ladies. I will try to find those scans.
