Though Archie (& gang) were the true stars, it's nice to see the secondary characters, too. Wilbur is just a little too close to Archie to evade the comparison, so I perfer Suzy as more of a change up. I like lil' Jinx and Josie (pre-Pussycats), too. I also really Super Duck by Al Fagaly and Cubby the Bear by 'Red' Holmdale, which I consider proto-underground comix, like precursors to R. Crumb and Rory Hayes respectively. Their superheroes could be a little flat, but they could also be full on nuts, which is great. Their monster-themed stuff is cool as well.
I love these cool books. I wish they had done more with these old characters. Another female character from the Archie family was Ginger. She was drawn by Harry Lucey and I should post some of those stories too.
Believe or not, I remembered Ginger right after publishing my other comment. Her taste in men was even more surprising than Betty & Veronica's in that her steady wasn't a copy of Archie but closer to a copy of Dilton, but minus the brains.
