  1. Ah... DARK SHADOWS... I barely watched the show even in rereuns, but its image was there as this unnerving, broody thing that was just out there... of a piece with the TV version of SALEM'S LOT on the edge of my childhood consciousness. Jonathan Frid might have been a poor man's Christopher Lee, but he certainly projected atmosphere & personality. Remakes miss the mark when they cast conventionally good-looking actors in his role 'cause he definitely wasn't, which made him all the cooler.

I don't think I've ever been impressed by Joe Certa's work but this was good with particularly nice touches in places. There are some cool special effects and that effective splash for the second chapter. I don't really get how the wolfman was supposed to be trapped on the isle, how he got out or what was trapping him again, but I'll let it go. Rampaging wolfman... reformed vampire... OK... OK... good enough...

  2. I did see some Dark Shadows as a kid and it was fun...a bit slow moving but fun. Jonathan Frid was the oldest Teen Idol at the time which was funny too...Seeing him on the cover of Tiger Beat. The 90's remake was fair. The Tim Burton movie was not good. Joe Certa was a competent artist. I never bought these books as a kid but I sort of enjoy them.
