There's some nice-looking art here. Gene Colan's drawning style was already pretty much at its final maturation but would look even better as his layouts opened up in later decades.
I can't claim to be any sort of chess fan, but I don't believe high-level games ever end in checkmate: it's my understanding that top-ranked players can see enough moves ahead that they concede defeat rather than play through to such an indignity.
The Bill Everett art is much appreciated, even if the story could be tighter. As far as stories go, I think the Russ Heath illustrated one was the best of the lot.
Russ was one of the great. The Colan and Everett stories are very nice too. Colan would hit his artistic peak in the 60's in my opinion and Everett was at his peak in the 50's.
